Relief Sculptures

June 10th, 2010

A relief is a sculptured artwork where a modelled form is raised, or, in a sunken-relief, lowered, from a plane from which the main elements of the composition project (or sink). Reliefs are common throughout the world, for example on the walls of monumental buildings. The frieze in the classical Corinthian order is often enriched with bas-relief (low relief). Alto-relievo (high-relief) may be seen in the pediments of classical temples, e.g., the Parthenon. Several panels or sections of relief together may represent a sequence of scenes.

There are three main types of relief. The drawing of the distinction between high and low is often drawn differently, and in fact the two are very often combined in a single work - in particular most “high-reliefs” contain sections in “low-relief”. Dashes may or may not be used in all these terms.

Bas-relief or low relief
A bas-relief or low relief is the quality of a projecting image where the overall depth is shallow. The background is very compressed or completely flat, as on most coins, on which all images are in low-relief.
Lorenzo Ghiberti’s gilded bronze “Doors of Paradise”, Baptistery, Florence combine high relief main figures with backgrounds mostly in low relief.

Bas-relief is very suitable for scenes with many figures and other elements such as a landscape or architectural background. A bas-relief may use any medium or technique of sculpture, but stone carving and metal casting are the traditional ones. If more than 50% of most rounded or cylindrical elements such as heads and legs project from the background, a sculpture is usually considered to be “alto rilievo” or “high relief”, although the degree of relief within both types may vary across a composition, with prominent features such as faces in higher relief.

High relief
High relief (or alto relievo, from Italian) is where the most prominent elements of the composition are undercut and rendered at more than 50% in the round against the background.

All cultures and periods where large sculptures were created used this technique as one of their sculptural options. Seen in “monumental sculpture” and architecture from ancient times to present.

Sunken relief
Sunken-relief depiction of Pharaoh Akhenaten with his wife Nefertiti and daughters. Note how strong shadows are needed to define the image.
Sunken-relief, also known as intaglio or hollow-relief, is where the image is made by carving into a flat surface - usually the images are mostly linear in nature. It is most notably associated with the Art of Ancient Egypt, where the strong sunlight usually needed to make the technique successful for images is present most of the time. In the sculpture of many cultures, including Europe, it is mostly used for inscriptions and engraved gems - the most likely meaning for “an intaglio”.

Climbing Wall

May 14th, 2010

A climbing wall is an artificially constructed wall with grips for hands and feet, used for climbing. Some are brick or wooden constructions, but on most modern walls, the material most often used is a thick multiplex board with holes drilled into it. Recently, manufactured steel climber and aluminum have also been used. The wall may have places to attach belay ropes, but may also be used to practice lead climbing or bouldering.

Each hole contains a specially formed t-nut to allow modular climbing holds to be screwed on to the wall. With manufactured steel or aluminum walls, an engineered industrial fastener is used to secure climbing holds. The face of the multiplex board climbing surface is covered with textured products including concrete and paint or polyurethane loaded with sand. In addition to the textured surface and hand holds, the wall may contain surface structures such as indentions (incuts) and protrusions (bulges), or take the form of an overhang, underhang or crack.

Some grips are formed to mimic the conditions of outdoor rock, including some that are oversized and can have other grips bolted onto them.

The concept of the artificial climbing wall began in the UK. The first wall was created in 1964 at Leeds University by Don Robinson, a lecturer in Physical Education and founder of DR Climbing Walls, by inserting pieces of rock into a corridor wall. The first commercial wall was built in Sheffield, traditionally England’s centre for climbing due to its proximity to the Peak District.

Gym climbing is becoming an increasingly popular urban sport and provides many people with the opportunity to try some aspects of the sport of rock climbing. Bouldering gyms focus on bouldering rather than roped climbing.

The simplest type of wall is of plywood construction, known colloquially in the climbing community as a ‘woody’, with a combination of either bolt-on holds or screw on holds. Bolt-on holds are fixed to a wall with iron bolts which are inserted through the hold, which will have specific bolt points, and then fixed into pre-allocated screw-threaded holes in the wall. Screw-on holds are, by contrast, usually much smaller, owing to the nature of their fixing. These holds are connected to the wall by screws which may be fastened anywhere on the wall’s surface.

Other types of walls include slabs of granite, concrete sprayed on to a wire mesh, pre-made fiberglass panels, manufactured steel and aluminum panels, and textured fiberglass walls.

Safety for Swimming Pool

May 13th, 2010

Pools present a significant risk of infant and toddler death due to drowning. In regions where residential pools are common, drowning is a major cause of childhood fatalities. Therefore it is advisable to closely watch small children around swimming pools, especially private pools that do not have professional lifeguards. Adults are more likely to be aware of risks, but it is still a good idea to have more than one person around when using a private pool. As a precaution, many municipalities have by-laws that require that residential pools be enclosed with fencing to restrict unauthorized access.

In public pools there is a lower risk of accident, with trained lifeguards on duty whenever the pool is open. Because of a desire for greater safety and technological advances in video monitoring, some pools are equipped with computer-aided drowning prevention or other forms of electronic safety and security systems.

The best way to ensure safety around pools is to be educated. Knowing how a swimming pool works greatly improves safety. Long haired individuals must avoid water inlets. These inlets, also known as skimmers, are rectangular holes on the wall that are sometimes partly or completely underwater. In private pools there can be one to two inlets, in public pools five to twenty. Also to be avoided are the main drains, usually identified as round mesh covered objects on the pool floor, as poor design can occasionally cause a safety problem. Building codes and product standards have eliminated these hazards for current designs, but not all pools are up to standard. One significant law to increase safety of pools is the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool And Spa Safety Act which regulates pools to reduce the risk of entrapment.

Also the bigger the body of water, the greater force it needs to have the water circulating. Stronger water pumps are used on large pools to keep them healthy, so extra care must be taken when swimming along the sides or floor of the pool, where drains are present. Some pools are designed without drains, which will 100% eliminate the potential of suction entrapment.

People with recent piercings are advised to keep those from being submerged in pools, to avoid them being infected.

Suspended ceilings in indoor swimming pools are safety-relevant components. As was demonstrated by the collapses of the ceiling of the Uster (Switzerland) indoor swimming pool (1985) and again at Steenwijk (Netherlands, 2001), attention must be paid to selecting suitable materials and inspecting the state of such components. The reason for the failures was stress corrosion cracking of metal fastening components made of stainless steel.

There is also the problem with chemical exposure from chlorinated swimming pools. Numerous scientific studies have shown increased instances of Asthma of those who swim regularly or those who work in and around indoor swimming pools. Another study with children found that kids who swam in indoor swimming pools for 1.8 hours or more a week had lung conditions similar to those of a heavy smoker. Also chlorine exposure from swimming pools has been shown to increase the risk of bladder and kidney cancer by more than 56% and it was also noted in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia, where 25% of the U.S. Olympic swim team suffered from some level of Asthma.

Garbage Bin

May 4th, 2010

I do not think garbage bins are the thing anyone would appreciate; however, as long as you want to have a nice living place, garbage bins are indispensable.

Dirt and clutter are the two things, which make your room unpleasant. If you want to make your house comfortable, make your family member relaxing and impress your visitors, then keep these two things off.

Any individual who is sensible enough will consider cleanliness as one major element in the lives of people. Making a perfect house can be starting with employing the use of garbage bins. The proper place of dirt and trash should be naturally locked is the garbage bins. If you appreciate the beauty of your home, you would know that garbage bins are the things that any home could not lack.

The function of garbage bins or trash bins may just to contain trashes, while the types are large. Based on the place they are placed, there are kinds of garbage bins. Outdoor garbage bins are those placed on a corner of your yard or even on the streets outside. A bathroom garbage bin is necessary inside your restrooms. Kitchen garbage bins, obviously, should always be in the corner of the kitchen but make sure that it does not create an unpleasant or unsanitary sight. Your bedrooms should also have a small garbage bin so that clutter and dirt will not linger around. Based on the material they are made from, there are wooden garbage bins, metal garbage bins, and plastic garbage bins. Wooden garbage bins are more nice while metal garbage bins are more durable, and plastic ones are light and easy to move, and suitable to daily life.

As the traditional idea, most garbage bins are purchased for functionality alone, but some people turn them into a dual-purpose instrument by making the trash can a decorative piece, too. It may sound senseless, but this notion has been used in households and business establishments. Besides keeping an establishment free from garbage, visitors will also see a work of art that you purchased from an art décor shop. Wood garbage bins would be decorated by kinds if basso-relievo, metal ones by different shapes, while plastic ones by various colors and pictures. Besides these three, there may be also garbage bins made from rubber, stone, and even fiberglass.

So, from now on, garbage bins are not only used to contain garbage, but also as decorative arts

Inflatable Bouncers

April 28th, 2010

Inflatable bouncers, also known as moonwalks, inflatable jumpers or inflatable trampolines, are those life-size toys filled with air that kids can jump, slide, and play in.

Inflatable bouncers are one of the best-love of the children. Being fit and active, they will spend hours on the Inflatable bouncers. They will play to their heart’s desire too. They would not stop jumping and playing around it, if they are allowed.

As obesity being a serious health problem, playing inflatable bouncers is a fantastic way for children’s exercise to control their weight while having fun, but not being tired as the traditional sports. With these life-size toys, you can mask exercise with playtime, which is a very neat way of asking your kids to burn some baby fats.

More importantly, as an adult, you can join in the fun too. There are many inflatable bouncers available today that can accommodate four or more kids and adults at the same time. Playing inflatable bouncer could be the best way for you to spend time with your kids, while burning some calories yourself.

Inflatable bouncers are by nature safe. However, there also may be some accident happening due to some improper usage and carelessness. To ensure your safety, the following points should be kept in your mind.

• The ground must be flat. Your inflatable bouncers cannot be set on a slope.
• There should be at least 5 feet of space on each side of the inflatable bouncers.
• Make sure there are no overhanging branches or power lines which are too close to the inflatable bouncers
• Clear the entire event area of debris, including sticks, rocks, toys, and animal waste
• Accessible power. Make out how many blowers your inflatable bouncers needs. You should have a separate 20-amp circuit available for each blower.
Inflatable bouncers cannot be used in inclement weather. In addition to rain, inflatable bouncers are not safe for using in the case that the winds exceed 25 miles per hour.
• Follow the rules: your inflatable bouncers should have a specification. Read and follow the rules on it.
• No shoes, jewelry, food or drink: anyone entering the inflatable bouncers must remove their shoes, jewelry, watches, including sharp objects. Likewise, food drinks, and gum should be kept out. In addition, no silly string can be used in inflatable bouncers- the chemicals will damage the vinyl.
• Take care to the steps: the steps leading out of a bouncer are inflatable and bouncy too, and getting out is awkward.
• Supervise: A responsible adult should observe each of your inflatable bouncers all the time to make sure things stay under control.

With this information in mind you would be well prepared to host a smooth and problem-free party or event. We hope you enjoy your interactive inflatable bouncers.

Playground Slides

April 20th, 2010

Playground slides are found in parks, schools, playgrounds and backyards. The slide may be flat, or half cylindrical or tubular to prevent falls. Slides are usually constructed of plastic or metal and they have a smooth surface that is either straight or wavy. The user, typically a child, climbs to the top of the slide via a ladder or stairs and sits down on the top of the slide and “slides” down the slide. In Australia the playground slide is known as a slippery slide or slippery dip.

Sliding pond or sliding pon is a term used in the New York City area to denote a playground slide.A playground slide is called Ghasargundi in Marathi (a language in India). An archaic word for the slide in Marathi is “Fisal Patti”. This word was used decades back by those couldn’t pronounce Ghasargundi well.

Playground slides are made of different materials. In the past, metal slides were popular and abundantly available. However, over time, these developed a number of problems that made them a poor choice. For instance, metal has a tendency to rust. Rust can be extremely dangerous as tiny hands could easily tear when they come into contact with these frayed edges. Also, metal tends to heat up quickly in the afternoon hours. Small children have to be extremely careful while using these. Due to these risk factors, metal swings have been largely replaced by plastic swings.

Playground slides
come in a variety of shapes. The most commonly seen type is the slide that has a smooth ramp on one side and a secure stair on the opposite end. It is possible to add a few twists to the basic structure and get oodles more fun. For instance, the slide can come with a small playhouse. Children will play in the playhouse and slide out through the ramp. Some slides are totally enclosed, giving you the experience of sliding through a tunnel. Even the normal slides may come with slight twists and turns, which can give you a totally different but exhilarating result. For instance, the turning slide is a wonderful experience, quite different from the normal but equally thrilling.

These days, you have slides that can be used by more than one child at a time. These slides will start at the same point but have channels that lead to different destinations. If there is more than one child, such a slide is a wonderful addition to the park as it enables them to play team games.

As you can see, playground slides are fun and can give your children great opportunities for play. However, slides can be a mite dangerous if small children are left unsupervised on them. Children playing on slides must be closely supervised by an adult to ensure their safety. At any time, safety is the most significant.

The development of inflatable boats in WW1 and WW2

April 15th, 2010

With the loss of the RMS Titanic in 1912, and World War I losses of ships to submarine-launched torpedoes, the need for inflatable boats was plain.

One cause of the loss of life on the Titanic was the lack of lifeboats. Even if every lifeboat had been completely filled with passengers and crew, there would have been no way to rescue more than half of all the people on board. The first SOLAS treaty was designed to avoid such a disaster happening again. One of its provisions was to ensure that vessels had enough lifeboats to provide every person aboard the vessel with a place. Putting this rule into effect was not difficult with cargo ships: they had small crews and plenty of deck space. Passenger ships had to stack lifeboats on top of each other to able to carry enough to accommodate the large number of passengers and crew. Warships also had large crews and little deck space.

Between the two World Wars, Goodyear found a way to join rubber to other materials. They made life rafts of square-shaped inflated rubber tubes with a rigid floor. Such rafts were to be stacked vertically aboard warships, usually standing on deck and leaning against deck-houses. But conservative thinking from navies held back this new idea.

Pierre Debroutelle’s 1937 design was the first known to have its inflatable tube in a U-shape. It was the first boat of its kind to be certified by the French Navy. Its added wooden transom was patented on 10 August 1943. This version was the predecessor of today’s inflatable sports and pleasure boats.

World War II changed everything. Submarine warfare in the Battle of the Atlantic led to casualties among warships and merchant ships.

US warships began using rubber life rafts. Since the rubber was much higher quality than 35 years before, the inflatable returned, but this time it was boat-shaped.

In military use inflatable boats were used to transport torpedoes and other cargo. They also allowed troops to make landings in shallow water, and their compact size and storability made overland transport possible.

The Marine Raiders were originally trained to carry out raids and landings from inflatable boats carried by high speed transports.

In August 1942 the submarines USS Argonaut and USS Nautilus carried elements of the 2nd Raider Battalion who carried out the Makin Island raid from LCR-L inflatable boats. Invasions of the Battle of Arawe by the 112th Cavalry Regiment and parts of the Battle of Tarawa involved amphibious landings in inflatable boats against heavy enemy resistance.

One of the models, the Zodiac brand inflatable boat, grew to be popular with the military and contributed significantly to the rise of the civilian inflatable boat industry, both in Europe and in the United States. After World War II, surplus inflatable boats were sold to the public. A version of this boat has been adapted by the Marine Mammal Center for use in rescuing injured marine mammals at sea.

Inflatable Slides

April 12th, 2010

As the hot summer is coming, Parents can prepare something funny for their kids. Playing in water is an amazing idea in the hot weather, so inflatable water slide is indispensable.

Large inflatable water slides for your backyard are really popular choice these days but there are some things you need to consider before purchasing these items. As they are for children, the safety and quality are the most significant element of the products.

Firstly, you should pay attention to the material. the slide’s material should be fire resistant and have a weight of 18 oz when finished. While the 18 oz weight is fairly standard as it is ideal for functionality, the quality and treatment of the material are most important when making quality comparisons.

Then the Seam Stitching
Because the seams are the weakest point of any fabric, the quality of stitching is often the critical factor in the lifetime of the slide. Industry standards require that seams be double stitched at the very least. By doing some research online you can find manufacturers who adhere to their own quality standards of triple or quadruple stitching stress point seams.

Tongue Tear
Tongue tear is a numerical value based on the amount of force applied before a fabric tears.  The industry standard for tongue tear on inflatable slides and equipment is 300/350 lbs. Some manufactures set their standards for tongue tear as high as 624/623 lbs which drastically lowers the chances of the material ripping.

Inflatable water slides are great for kids to use a birthday party, especially during the hot summer months. They are basically dry inflatable slides that are blown up and have a hose put on them. The hose is ran continuously so that the slide stays wet at all times. Adding water to an inflatable slide adds a great extra dimension of fun for kids. They will remember their slide for years to come and probably request it for their next party!

Another very popular product is the combination of bounce house and water slides. For very small size you can get them as low as $60, but they can range, most combination bounce house and inflatable water slides are intended for children 3 and up. Smaller children just love these kinds of bouncy and slippery slides, and they are able to spent hours playing and jumping without getting bored or getting in trouble.
